Introduction Each year in the United States several million children experience some extreme traumatic event. Some of these events include natural disasters, death of a loved one, vehicle accidents, physical and/or sexual abuse and witnessing domestic violence. Children are increasingly exposed to violence in society. Many of these children may develop some form of psychological problems that can significantly impair their emotional, academic, and social functioning. Research has noted that many of these children will become fearful of their environment and develop expectations that their future will be unhappy. These children are in need of interventions to help them develop productive modes of coping. Over the years there have†¦show more content†¦In a study on toddlers and preschoolers (Lieberman, Van Horn, Grandison, Pekarsky, 1997) used the dyadic approach of parent-child intervention and assessed the parent-child functioning along with their relationship. Other research has noted this approach in working with the parent-child with notable outcomes (Lieberman, Van Horn, Grandison Pekarsky, 1997; Cohen, Mannarino, Murray Igelman, 2006; Ziegler Weidner, 2006; Graham-Beermann et al, 2007.) This psychotherapy approach is also influenced by attachment theory and has been noted to be promising (Lieberman, Van Horn, Grandison Pekarsky, 1997). On the other hand Gewirtz and Edleson (2007) noted that some children develop successfully, performing at least as well as their low risk peers across a variety of domains. The children have been labeled competent, resilient and even invulnerable (Gewirtz Edleson, 2007). There is a correlation to resilience found when a child has a good parent-child relationship and good assets (Gewirtz Edleson, 2007). Personal Knowing and Its Relevance to Advanced Practice Nursing Throughout the development of theory in the discipline of nursing there are concepts of knowledge that are fundamental. Four of these patterns of knowing were first explored by Carper (1978) which included: empirical knowing, ethical knowing, personal knowing, and aesthetic knowing. Later, an additional facet was added by Chinn and Kramer (2008) which introduced emancipitory knowing. While all of these forms of knowledge are critical for holistic nursing care, this paper will place an emphasis on personal knowledge and how it contributes to the development of knowledge within nursing and the roles of advanced care practitioners. What is Personal Knowledge? Personal knowledge is the most ambiguous of the five patterns of knowing. Much of this is due to the fact that there is no way to neither verbalize nor teach personal knowledge, yet it is deemed, â€Å"the most essential to understanding the meaning of health in terms of individual well-being† (Carper, 1978, p. 18). Personal knowledge describes the awareness of not only one’s self but also the patient as an individual with worth, and the meaning of the moment (Chinn Kramer, 2008). While it cannot be articulated, personal knowledge is expressed as a â€Å"genuine self† and can be partially conveyed through written works such as autobiographies and stories of meaningful interactions (Chinn Kramer, 2008, p. 7). Both the movie and book of Into the Wild explore the adventure that Chris Mishandles takes, while the book focuses on comparing Chris to other people and the relationships he had, the movie focuses specifically on the life story and adventure of Chris Mishandles, therefore the movie is better than the book. The number one thing I noticed in the movie that was different in the book is that Caring (his sister) tells the entire story. During the book though, the narrator position changes between interviewers and people he met. I think that by having Caring tell the story, the movie was a little more understandable. The book was a little complex because it is hard to determine who is telling the story. One thing the director did that really stood out to me was where he set the theme. Instead of filming in one place, the director traveled all over the IIS and filmed everywhere Mishandles went. My favorite thing that the director changed was how he added captions. Following Chris Mishandles death, a few months after the crime scene was revisited. After further investigation, they found out that he did not confuse the potato root and sweet pea. He actually died because the potato root plopped a mold because Mishandles was not storing them properly. Wish the director had put this in the movie. A lot of people think that Mishandles was a kid who was unintelligent and didnt think.This investigation shows that Mishandles was not an unintelligent kid making stupid decisions. It shows that if anyone else were in his situation, they would have died too, by accident. When Chris meets Jim Galling in the book, it tells about their conversation and explains how Jim Galling is a kind and gentle person. The director of the movie made Jim and Chrisms encounter very short and it felt as though Jim was almost rude, which he was not. The director should not have changed this part.My least favorite thing, in the movie that I do not think the director should have changed was putting in nudity and swearing. In the book, Chris says one swearword throughout the whole adventure. Personally to me, this movie should not have been rated R. Even though Chris Mishandles Visits the hot springs, the director did not need to show any nudity in it. I am glad that the director did not change anything that happened between Chris and Mr. . Stickles. The director did a very good job expressing how perfect their relationship was. He also did a very good job in the scene where Mr..Stickles asks to adopt Chris. I think that overall the director did an extremely good job at this adaptation of the book. When I read the book, felt like the narrators changed too much and there were to many side stories about different people. Although, in the movie felt that it focused just on Chris. Personally, I loved both the book and the movie for different reasons. If you wanted to learn about the basic life of Chris Mishandles I would recommend the movie. If you wanted more depth than the movie I would definitely recommend the book!
